Dear Church Family, When God was trying to get His people to come back into right relationship with Himself, He led the prophet Jeremiah to a potter's house. In Chapter 18 Jeremiah wrote, "I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel. The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him."
What Jeremiah saw there at the potter's house was a "living parable" concerning God at work in the lives of His people. Just as that potter was molding and shaping the clay into a work of art, God was doing so to Israel. However, just as the clay in the potter's hand ceased to conform to the potter's handiwork, so was Israel doing in God's hand. So, in essence, Jeremiah called for the people of Israel to let God make them into a "vessel" pleasing to God. The "living parable" Jeremiah witnessed was really about spiritual formation. God is actively working in our lives to make and mold us into the servants and saints He desires for us to be. That is spiritual formation. I believe God uses all of our experiences to grow and mature us spiritually. Yes, He uses the "spiritual" experiences such as Bible study, worship, fellowship, prayer, etc., but I believe He also uses the so-called "secular" experiences as well. I believe God can and does use even things like spats with loved ones, stress at work, movies, conversations over dinner and even flat tires to mold us into His likeness. The question is, how moldable are we? Are we yielding to God's hand at work in us or are we like the clay in the potter's hand marred? God is the Master Artist. He desires to create a spiritual masterpiece in each of us. Let us all sincerely pray as did the hymn writer, "Have Thine own way, Lord, have Thine own way."
Blessings,
Pastor Lee
